Zord Boost, Wrong Zord

One-shot

Adventure Summary

A mysterious Ranger named Prism arrives offering cutting-edge technology to upgrade the team's Zords with experimental power cores. The upgrades work brilliantly—until the cores begin draining energy from the Morphing Grid itself, threatening to sever the Rangers' connection to their powers. Prism is actually a shapeshifting agent of the villainous Shadow Collective, using the Rangers to destabilize their own power source.

Session Zero

Players should create Rangers with at least one Zord each. The adventure works best with 3-5 players. This session features themes of betrayal and technological sabotage. Rangers will face moral choices about accepting help from strangers and dealing with the consequences of their decisions.

Content warnings: Body horror elements when the Zords malfunction, themes of betrayal and manipulation.

The Hook

Choose one or combine elements:

Hook 1: The Beacon Signal — The Rangers receive an encrypted transmission on their communicators using authentic Grid frequencies. The message promises "evolution of your arsenal" and coordinates to an abandoned tech facility in the industrial district.

Hook 2: Combat Interruption — During a battle with Shadow Collective grunts, a silver-and-chrome Ranger appears, easily dispatching enemies with technology the team has never seen. Afterward, they introduce themselves as Prism and offer to share their innovations.

Hook 3: Mentor's Curiosity — The Rangers' mentor intercepts schematics for Zord power core upgrades transmitted from an unknown source. The technology appears legitimate but untraceable. They ask the Rangers to investigate while remaining cautious.

Scene 1 — Meeting Prism

The coordinates lead to an abandoned energy research facility on the outskirts of Angel Grove's industrial sector. The building's exterior shows decades of weathering, but inside one laboratory gleams with active holographic displays and humming equipment clearly installed recently.

Prism waits inside—a Ranger in gleaming chrome armor with prismatic accents that shift colors in the light. Their helmet features a mirrored visor that prevents reading their expression. The lab contains five pristine crystalline power cores on pedestals, each pulsing with different-colored energy.

Prism explains they're an "independent Grid researcher" who's developed cores that amplify Zord power output by 300%. They've been tracking the Shadow Collective's increasing attacks and want to help. The cores simply install into existing Zord power systems. Prism claims they're offering these freely because "Rangers should stand together."

Investigation opportunities:

Prism won't demonstrate the cores personally, claiming their Zord is "off-world on another mission." They provide technical specifications that check out and offer to install them remotely once the Rangers deploy their Zords. They'll disappear if pressed too hard but leave the cores behind with installation instructions.

The cores appear completely safe and functional. The technology is real.

Scene 2 — The Upgrade

The Rangers must decide whether to install the cores. Prism provides remote installation assistance via communicator if accepted. The installation process requires each Zord to be deployed in vehicle mode in an open area.

If the Rangers install the cores:

The process takes thirty minutes. Each core phases into its Zord's power system in a dazzling light show. Immediately, the Rangers feel increased responsiveness. Power readings spike dramatically.

Before they can properly test the upgrades, Shadow Collective forces attack—a squad of Grunt Troopers led by a Lieutenant in black armor wielding an energy lance.

The upgraded Zords perform spectacularly, cutting through enemies with 50% more power. Combat feels effortless. However, mid-battle, Rangers must make Zord Control checks (DC 11) as the cores begin causing minor feedback—momentary static in the neural link.

After defeating the attack, the cores' glow intensifies. Perception check (DC 13) notices the cores are now pulsing in synchronized rhythm, and the Zords' energy signatures are bleeding into each other.

If the Rangers refuse the upgrade:

Prism vanishes, clearly disappointed. Within hours, Shadow Collective forces attack the city with a new monster—Technophage, a biomechanical horror designed to absorb Zord energy. The Rangers must fight conventionally while noticing the monster seeks out Grid energy sources specifically. Investigation check (DC 14) during combat reveals Technophage is designed to counter the specific upgrade frequencies the cores would have generated—this attack was planned around Rangers having the upgrade.

Either path leads to Scene 3, though the specifics differ.

Scene 3 — Grid Collapse

If cores were installed:

Six hours after installation, the cores begin catastrophic malfunction. The Zords activate spontaneously and start drawing massive power from the Morphing Grid. Rangers feel their connection weakening (DC 15 Willpower checks to maintain morphed form). The city's power grid fails as Grid energy bleeds into local systems.

Prism appears, helmet finally removed, revealing a featureless silver face—a Mimic Infiltrator from the Shadow Collective. They gloat that the cores are Grid leeches designed to drain the Rangers' power source permanently. In 20 minutes, the Morphing Grid will collapse in this region.

The choice: Rangers can either:

1. Overload the cores — Pilot their Zords into a coordinated strike on each other's cores simultaneously. Coordinated Combat check (DC 16), requires all Rangers to succeed. Success destroys cores but damages Zords (25% HP each). Failure causes Grid backlash dealing 20 damage to each Ranger.

2. Reverse the flow — Use the Zords' own systems to feed energy back into the cores until they shatter. Technology check (DC 17) and Zord Control check (DC 15). Success destroys cores cleanly. Failure causes one Zord to go dormant for 1d4 days.

3. Separation protocol — Manually remove cores while Zords are active. Requires entering active Zord systems. Athletics check (DC 14) to reach cores, DC 18 Technology check to extract safely. Success removes cores intact for study. Failure deals 15 damage and cores remain.

Prism summons Technophage regardless to cover their escape. The monster (HP: 80, Defense: 15, absorbs 5 damage from any Grid-based attack) must be fought while solving the core problem.

Possible endings:

If cores were refused:

Technophage attacks at full strength specifically to punish the Rangers for not falling into the trap. Prism appears commanding it, frustrated their plan failed. The battle is straightforward but Prism provides tactical support to the monster.

Rangers can capture Prism with coordinated attacks (DC 14 Combat checks from at least 3 Rangers in one round). Captured, Prism reveals the Shadow Collective is specifically targeting Grid infrastructure, and the core scheme was only their first attempt.

NPCs

Prism (Mimic Infiltrator Agent) Chrome-armored shapeshifter working for Shadow Collective. Motivated by destabilizing Ranger teams to enable larger invasions. Charismatic and patient.

Dr. Sarah Chen (Rangers' Mentor) Brilliant scientist and former Grid researcher. Provides remote technical support. Motivated by protecting her team while encouraging their independence.

Shadow Lieutenant Krane Ambitious field commander hoping to prove himself. Motivated by earning a promotion through capturing Ranger technology.

Technophage Bio-mechanical monster resembling a metallic mantis crossed with computer components. Motivated purely by consuming Grid energy—it's essentially a weapon-beast.

Mayor Richard Torres Angel Grove's mayor, unaware of Ranger identities. Motivated by protecting citizens and managing crisis response during Grid disruptions.
