Elysium, Last Call

V5 One-shot

Adventure Summary

The monthly Elysium at the historic Meridian Hotel ends in catastrophe when Lord Marcus Ashford, the Prince's most trusted advisor, is murdered during a moment of darkness. The assembled Kindred find themselves sealed inside by mystical wards that won't fall until dawn—six hours away. The coterie must identify the killer before sunrise destroys them all, navigating a web of ancient grudges, political schemes, and the growing Hunger of trapped vampires.

Session Zero

Players should create Kindred characters who have reason to attend Elysium—either established members of the local court or visitors seeking recognition. Emphasize social and investigative skills over combat prowess. The adventure works best with 3-5 players of any clan, preferably with diverse skill sets.

Content Warnings: Murder mystery with graphic violence, themes of addiction and manipulation, potential player-versus-player conflict, time pressure creating tension. Discuss boundaries around PvP accusations and ensure players are comfortable with high-stakes social confrontation.

Required Knowledge: Players should understand basic Kindred society (Elysium as neutral ground, the Traditions, the Prince's authority), but the scenario includes enough context for newer players.

The Hook

Hook 1 — Established Court Members: The coterie has been summoned to this month's Elysium to witness Lord Ashford announce new territorial arrangements. Their individual domains or resources may be affected by his decree, giving them stakes in the evening's proceedings.

Hook 2 — Seeking Favor: The characters are petitioning for official recognition, feeding rights, or resolution to a dispute. Lord Ashford controls the docket—his decision tonight determines their standing in the city.

Hook 3 — Reluctant Attendance: The Prince's Seneschal has made attendance mandatory for all Kindred in the city tonight. Failure to appear is a breach of the First Tradition. The coterie arrives expecting a tedious political gathering, not a death trap.

Scene 1 — The Meridian Ballroom

The Meridian Hotel's grand ballroom glitters with calculated opulence—crystal chandeliers, velvet curtains the color of old blood, and art deco flourishes from the building's 1920s heyday. Twenty-three Kindred circulate through the space, maintaining the careful dance of Elysium protocol. No violence permitted, no Disciplines used aggressively, all grudges temporarily set aside.

Lord Marcus Ashford holds court near the eastern windows, a distinguished figure in tailored gray, his presence commanding despite his moderate Generation. The Prince herself has not yet arrived—customary for her to make an entrance after the assembled court has mingled.

At precisely 10:47 PM, the lights cut out completely.

In the darkness, Kindred senses register movement, a sharp intake of breath, and the distinctive sound of wood splintering flesh. When the emergency lighting flickers on eighteen seconds later, Lord Ashford lies on the marble floor, an ornate wooden stake driven through his heart. He remains conscious—paralyzed but aware—his eyes wide with fury and fear.

Before anyone can react, Magdalene Cross, the court's Tremere advisor, staggers forward. "The wards! Someone has sealed the building. Blood magic—I can feel it." She gestures at the windows, where a faint crimson shimmer now pulses. "We're trapped until the caster releases us or..."

"Or until sunrise," someone finishes. On the eastern horizon, barely visible, the faintest hint of pre-dawn threatens. Six hours remain.

Investigation Opportunities:

Escalating Tension: As the investigation begins, Kindred begin showing signs of rising Hunger. The sealed building prevents anyone from feeding, and stress accelerates the Beast's demands.

Scene 2 — Uncovering Motives

The coterie must navigate increasingly hostile political factions while piecing together who wanted Ashford dead. Multiple suspects emerge, each with convincing motives and suspicious behavior.

Key Suspects:

Silas Cordovan (Ventrue primogen) argues loudly that Ashford was preparing to strip him of his holdings in the financial district. He was near the windows when the lights failed. Under pressure (Manipulation + Intimidation vs. his Composure + Resolve, pool of 6), he admits he planned to challenge Ashford's recommendation but insists he didn't attack him. His expensive suit shows no trace of wood splinters.

Dr. Helena Voss (Thin-Blood physician) was Ashford's latest failed experiment in "managing" thin-blood populations. She has access to medical equipment and knowledge of Kindred anatomy. Investigation of her bag (Wits + Larceny, Difficulty 3) reveals notes about paralyzing Kindred—but also evidence she was planning to leave the city tonight to escape Ashford's "protection."

Gabriel Stone (Brujah anarch) openly despised Ashford's conservative policies but was across the room playing chess with witnesses during the attack. However, his ghoul assistant, Thomas, had access to the breaker room and shows signs of recently used Dominate commands (Resolve + Awareness, Difficulty 4 to notice the glazed affect and memory gaps).

Critical Choice — The Accusation:

As evidence mounts, the coterie must decide whether to:

1. Accuse publicly in front of the assembled court, risking social catastrophe if they're wrong and permanent enmity with powerful Kindred. 2. Confront suspects privately, gathering confessions but allowing the true killer time to cover tracks or escape. 3. Investigate the magical wards themselves, potentially discovering the mechanism can be temporarily weakened—but doing so might alert the killer to destroy evidence.

Revelation (Intelligence + Occult, Difficulty 5): The blood magic wards aren't a trap—they're a summons. Someone wanted all these specific Kindred locked in a room together, and Ashford's murder is a message, not the primary goal.

Time Pressure: Every hour that passes, another Kindred loses control to Hunger frenzy. The GM should make Hunger Frenzy checks (Willpower, Difficulty increasing from 2 to 5) for NPCs, creating mounting chaos.

Scene 3 — Sunrise Approaches

With ninety minutes until sunrise, the truth crystallizes. The killer is Magdalene Cross herself, the Tremere who announced the wards. She created a perfect locked-room mystery to expose a conspiracy: Lord Ashford wasn't working for the Prince alone, but was secretly collaborating with the Second Inquisition, providing information about Kindred havens in exchange for protection of his own assets.

Ashford's phone (if discovered through thorough investigation) contains encrypted communications with SI handlers. Cross murdered him not for personal gain but to protect the Masquerade—and trapped everyone inside to force the court to confront the traitor in their midst before more Kindred died.

Ending 1 — Justice Served:

If the coterie uncovers both the murder and the conspiracy, they can present evidence to the assembled court. Cross removes the wards, accepting whatever punishment the Prince decrees. However, she's revealed a deeper rot in the power structure. The coterie earns significant Status for solving the crisis, but now knows dangerous secrets about the court's vulnerabilities.

Ending 2 — Scapegoat:

If the coterie accuses the wrong person (or no one), Cross allows an innocent Kindred to be blamed and punished. She releases the wards at the last moment, but the coterie has created a powerful enemy and damaged their own reputation. Cross approaches them privately afterward, revealing the truth and offering them a place in her longer game—or their silence in exchange for favors.

Ending 3 — Chaos Reigns:

If the coterie fails to identify anyone before sunrise approaches and Hunger frenzies cascade out of control, Cross is forced to drop the wards early to prevent total catastrophe. In the chaos, Ashford is quietly destroyed, the evidence vanishes, and the Prince demands answers. The coterie becomes convenient scapegoats for the court's failure unless they can negotiate their way out or flee the city entirely.

Final Complication: Regardless of outcome, Lord Ashford (if still paralyzed) can communicate through writing or have the stake removed. He will deny everything about the Second Inquisition and claim Cross framed him. The coterie must decide who to believe and what to do with information that could reshape the city's power structure.

NPCs

Lord Marcus Ashford — Distinguished Ventrue advisor, secretly compromised by Second Inquisition contacts. Motivated by survival and maintaining his privileged position at any cost.

Magdalene Cross — Tremere blood magician, court advisor with hidden idealistic streak. Motivated by protecting the Masquerade even through murder, believes individual Kindred are expendable for the greater good.

Silas Cordovan — Ventrue primogen of financial interests, politically aggressive but ultimately conventional. Motivated by ambition and genuine (if selfish) belief in orderly Kindred society.

Dr. Helena Voss — Thin-Blood physician trying to help her kind survive in hostile territory. Motivated by escaping oppression and protecting vulnerable thin-bloods from exploitation.

Gabriel Stone — Brujah anarch who vocally opposes the court but plays by Elysium rules. Motivated by principled opposition to authoritarian control, uses his ghoul Thomas for tasks he can publicly deny.

GM Advice

Rewards

Experience: Award 3-5 XP based on investigation thoroughness, creative problem-solving, and quality roleplaying under pressure. Bonus XP for resolving the situation without breaking Elysium or losing characters to frenzy.

Status: Successfully identifying the killer and handling the SI conspiracy earns 1-2 dots of Status (City). Failure or causing chaos may result in loss of Status or being declared Persona Non Grata.

Resources: Access to Lord Ashford's now-vacant territorial holdings (if players navigate the political aftermath cleverly), information about Second Inquisition operations (dangerous but valuable), or a boon from Magdalene Cross (if they help her escape consequences).

Contacts: Deepened relationships with key NPCs based on how the coterie treated them during interrogation. Suspects who were treated with respect may become valuable allies; those falsely accused become permanent enemies.

Secrets: Knowledge of the Second Inquisition infiltration is itself a powerful resource—and a dangerous burden. How the coterie uses this information can drive future chronicles.
